Irish riders Kevin McCambridge and Cathir Doyle have been making a big impression on the Belgian junior kermesse scene, riding away from the opposition by minutes in their latest race.
McCambridge won with Doyle in 2nd, though Doyle had already collected a victory in Belgium in recent days.
Their latest event was today, Friday, in Opwijk, Brussels, where they had three minutes in hand on the next rider home after combining brilliantly off the front.
With Matthew Devins (Yeats County CC) active on the attack in the early stages, McCambridge and Doyle made their move about half way through the 10-lap event over two hours.
They got off the front on the fifth lap, riding hard in the crosswinds to gain an initial gap and then driving hard for another lap to ensure their lead stuck.
Once they had established an advantage over the peloton they continued to combine and pulled out three minutes.
Belgian rider Hiden van der Beke managed to get clear of the chasers to take 3rd place, some 2:59 down on McCambridge (Vitus-Chill-NRPT) and Doyle (Powerhouse Sport).
Another Belgian rider - Diel Vergote - was 4th some 3:05 down. And in the sprint for 5th place a few seconds later Bulgarian Preslav Balabanov just beat Ireland's Nathan Keown (North Down CC).
We'll have more on Doyle soon; a rider who has staged a remarkable comeback to win in Kooigem, West Flanders on Wednesday, and claim 2nd today.
