Ireland's McCambridge and Ryan rip it up at Nations Cup in Germany

Irish rider Kevin McCambridge in the winning breakaway on stage 2 of the Nations Cup race
LVM Saarland Trofeo in Germany today. Archie Ryan made the escape on yesterday's opener.

Kevin McCambridge and Archie Ryan have
been flying the Irish flag in some style at the junior Nations Cup in Germany,
making the winning breakaways.

Ryan was in the escape yesterday on the
opening day of LVM Saarland Trofeo and on today’s stage 2 it was the turn
McCambridge.

And now with two stages of five
completed, McCambridge is in 4th position overall. He is 1:40 off the race
leader Andrii Ponomar (Ukraine).

Ponomar was the only rider in the race
to make the breakaway on both stages so far.

On today’s 110.6km stage from Neunkirchen to Münchwies McCambridge went clear in a group of 10 men
after 9km.

They worked well to pull out a gap of
almost two minutes and stayed intact for a long time despite several climbs on
the course.

With about 85km completed the group had
swelled as eight riders had managed to bridge across.

However, the lumpy course and the pace
up front began to take its toll and the large front group was whittled down to
10 riders.

Andrii Ponomar (Ukraine), the only man
who was also in the winning breakaway yesterday, attacked off the front and
went on to win today’s stage solo.

Andrii Ponomar (Ukraine) takes today's stage and the race lead. He made the breakaway on both yesterday's stage 1 and today's stage 2. And after winning solo today he now has a very significant lead overall with three stages to come over the next two days.

The finish line was at the top of a
climb and saw the remainder of the escape group slit up.

Hjalmar Klyver of Sweden was 2nd, some
38 seconds down on the winner. Just one further second back came Robin Juel
Skivild (Denmark) in 3rd place.

Two seconds after him, and 41 seconds
down on the winner, German Hannes Wilksch took 4th.

Then came Ireland’s McCambridge in 5th
and Sam Watson (Great Britain) in 6th; both on the same time as Wilksch.

Three more of the breakaway then finish
7th, 8th and 9th just a few further seconds back.

Sakarias Koller Løland of Norway wins yesterday's stage 1 from a breakaway that also included Ireland's Archie Ryan. The Irish rider was 8th and is just visible behind the German rider in this photo

Yesterday’s opening stage took the
riders 113km from Aßweiler to Erfweiler-Ehlingen .

Archie Ryan put in a terrific ride to
place 8th though he initially missed what would prove to be the winning
breakaway.

He got across to the move with Germany’s
Brenner in the company of one of the Norwegians and an Italian.

The breakaway had gone clear about
halfway through the stage on a climb and looked to be out of sight.

However, Ryan and the trio he was with
bridged across and the group would stay away, putting 49 seconds into the main
field.

That opening stage was won by Sakarias
Koller Løland of Norway. The top nine, including Ryan in 8th, all finished on
the same time as the stage winner.

Tomorrow, Saturday, the international
field made up of national selections from all over the world faces a split
stage.

The proceedings start with a short and
sharp 81km road race stage starting and finishing in Homburg.

That’s followed in the evening with a
30km TTT, an unusual event to be included on the UCI Junior Nations Cup event.

The race concludes on Sunday with a road
stage. Previously called Trofeo Karlsberg, the event was won in 2014 by Eddie
Dunbar.
