Cian Keogh has
taken victory in the Beechmount Cup after going on the attack for much of the
race with Cyrus Monk and Charlie Prendergast.
While the winner’s
Spellman Dublin Port team mate, Paul Kennedy, was with the leading trio on the
attack through the race, he had to be content with finishing just behind them
in 4th place.
Ryan Geraghty (Bikeworx Celbridge) won the sprint from the bunch for 4th place from up and coming junior Odhran Doogan (Caldwell Cycles) in Kilmessan, Co Meath.
Maura Claffey (UCD Cycling Club) took the women’s category on the night from Katie Neill (TC Racing) in the Navan Road Club promotion.
While the first four over the line started in the scratch
group of A1-A2 riders which set off in pursuit of the A3 and A4 groups attacked
early and knuckled down to the task at hand over the three-lap event.
They made short work of the handicapping and had worked
their way to the front of the race after just one lap, though eventual winner
Keogh then almost missed the boat.
After the four A1 riders got on terms, a breakaway group
formed and while it included Monk (EvoPro Racing), Prendergast (Dan
Morrissey-MIG-Pactimo) and Kennedy, Cian Keogh was not present.
He found himself in the second group on the road but set
off in pursuit of the breakaway with a number of A3 and junior riders for
company.
And when those two groups came together, Keogh’s chances
of victory on the night were restored.
A little later he went on the attack with Monk and
Prendergast, with that group surviving to fight for victory.
In the three-up sprint Keogh got the better of Monk, a
23-year-old who won the U23 Australian road race title in 2018.
Prendergast, who was so dominant last year in taking win after win, had to settle for 3rd place in the sprint to the line at the end of the race followed by Kennedy on his own and then the next large group.
