Keith Gater has won the National Vets' Road Race Championships in Multyfarnham, Co Westmeath, this evening after bursting out of the five-man breakaway and soloing to the line.

The Aquablue man had around 30 seconds to spare over the Iverk Produce Carrick Wheelers pair of Rory Wyley and defending champion Hugh Mulhearne.

That trio had been part of the day's decisive breakaway which also contained Paul Kennedy (VeloRevolution) and John Madden (Dig Deep-Inspired Coaching).

At one point the escape had over two minutes on the peloton.

However, such was the pace up front that renowned time trial strongman Madden and bronze medal winner at the recent elite National Criterium Championships Kennedy saw their challenge fade; both being distanced before the finish.

One of the race's big favourites, Greg Swinand (UCD CC) missed the key move but made a phenomenal effort in trying to bridge across to it alone.

He would overhaul Madden and Kennedy but ran out of road in his pursuit if the leaders and was forced to settle for 4th place on the day.

More later.
