Kanturk Three Day final stage | Breakaway wins the day as Luke holds on

Samuel Luke (Newcastle West CC) seized the yellow jersey on yesterday's penultimate stage of the Kanturk Three Day and stood his ground on the final stage today to win the race overall.

However, while he had the yellow jersey going into today's decider on the Banteer Circuit, other strong riders were breathing down his neck, especially the in-form Barry Meade of host club O'Leary Stone Kanturk, who began the day just one second down.

As was the case yesterday, when Luke took control with a breakaway ride, another group of attackers got up the road today and made it all the way.

However, the composition of that group, and the more modest time they gained, meant there was no change in the overall. Luke won the 2025 edition by one second from Meade, with Ben Murphy (Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club) 3rd at three seconds.

Yesterday’s stage 3 winner, Yan Tsymbal (West Clare CC) has finished 4th overall, at six seconds, with Marc Flavin (Dungarvan CC) 5th at 18 seconds and yesterday's runner-up, Sean O’Kane (Orwell Wheelers), rounding out the top six overall at 29 seconds.

Today, five attackers made it all the way to the finish, including stage 1 winner Ronan Killeen (Lucan CRC) and Simon Ryan (Greenmount CA), a former top A1 rider who is clearly in good form again.

With that experienced duo were: juniors Kris Martinkus (O'Leary Stone Kanturk) and Diarmuid Collins (Team Tarrants Munster) as well as Ross Lee of Burren CC.

Martinkus (18) took the stage victory - for the promoting club - just ahead of Ryan and Killeen, with Collins 4th at two seconds and Lee 5th at three seconds. Meade brought home the bunch, taking the sprint for 6th place, some 43 seconds after stage winner Martinkus had crossed the line.

Yellow jersey, Luke, was in that bunch and finished in 28th place, but with no gaps opening on the peloton a the finish, Meade taking the sprint for 6th did nothing to change the overall result.
