Riley Smith, a junior rider competing with Banbridge Cycling Club, has taken his first win of the season when he was best at the Wylie Ruddell Armagh Criterium near Portadown, Co Armagh.

Smith has raced strongly at times this senior against the senior riders, as he did in his latest outing to take the victory from a four-man breakaway that got clear before the halfway point in the race.

That move got clear shortly after the first prime of the race, with young Smith joined by fellow junior James Armstrong, the Irish cyclocross international now riding for Belgian team Molenspurters Meulebeke.

They were joined by Riley's Banbridge CC team mate, Aaron Parks, and Michael Phelan of Spellman Dublin Port, making for a strong group out front in what was a C2-C3 mass start race promoted by Orchard Cycling Club.
