Philip O'Connor, the second-year 17-year-old junior riding for Dungarvan CC, has taken the biggest victory of his career in claiming the main event at the Galway Classic. He prevailed, ahead of some of the best C1s in the country, in what is Ireland's only road race with gravel, or bog, sectors.

O'Connor, who rode the European Youth Olympics for Ireland two years ago, has really put himself in the frame for more international selection this year with his performance today.

However, it perhaps comes as no surprise as he was 3rd in the A1-A3 Des Hanlon Memorial las year, one of Irish cycling's biggest road races.

Today, O'Connor triumphed in today's Galway CC promotion just ahead of Daire Feeley of Burren CC, and a big scalp to take. Mitchel McLaughlin, the Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli who has been in flying form in recent weeks, filled the final position on the podium in the C1 race.
