Junior O’Brien tops Cycling Ireland’s women’s rankings; 222 riders ranked

Junior rider Aoife O’Brien has ended the 2022 season on top of the W1 Cycling Ireland rankings. The Torelli-Assure-Cayman Islands Scimitar rider, who was junior national road race champion last year, was best of the 44 riders in the top tier of the rankings. There were 221 riders ranked across the national governing body's three categories for women, with the rankings for all three listed below.

O’Brien, who was selected for the road Europeans this year and last and road the Worlds in Belgium in 2021, came out on as top-ranked Irish elite-junior rider with a tally of 63 points.

She led the way from cyclocross international Darcy Harkness (VC Glendale), on 52 points. Caoimhe O’Brien (Torelli-Assure-Cayman Islands-Scimitar), older sister of Aoife, was 3rd with 52 pints while Gabriele Glodenyte (UCD Cycling Club) and Erin Grace Creighton (McConvey Cycles) were next on 47 points followed by Jemma Spears (North Down CC), in 6th place, on 44 pounts.

The women’s rankings are now split into three categories; W1, W2 and W3. O’Brien won the Waller Cup in Bohermeen, Co Meath, this year and was 3rd at the Meath GP, which was a round of the elite Cycling Ireland National Road Series this season.

She also placed 3rd in the elite National Criterium Championships and was 2nd – to Creighton – in the junior road race at the National Road Championships in Kantrurk.

The 32-rider W2 rankings were won by Evan Brenna of UCD Cycling Club, on 16 points from Ciara Kinch (Cuchulainn CC) and Orla Hendron (Orwell Wheelers), both of whom scored 15 points. In the 146-rider W3 rankings, Danielle Forshaw (Gorey CC) ended the season on top on 14 points from Ellen Murray (TC Racing) and Faith Hilliard (TC Racing); both on 13 points.
