Jumbo Visma took another 1-2-3 today at Paris-Nice, their second of the race, and in doing so equaled one of the records set by Sean Kelly and his Sem-Mavic-Reydel team mates way back in 1983.
The Dutch team took their first 1-2-3 on the opening stage on Sunday when Christophe Laporte, Wout van Aert and Primož Roglič rode away from everyone on the last climb. They gained just over 20 seconds on remains of the peloton, with Laporte gifted the stage by his team mates.
Before that performance, the last time a team had taken a 1-2-3 on a stage of Paris-Nice was at the 1983 edition when Sean Kelly and his Sem-Mavic-Reydel team mates Jean-Marie Grezet and Steven Rooks were 1st, 2nd and 3rd on the stage 7b Col d'eze TT. The team had also taken a clean sweep of the podium on stage 4, when Kelly won from his team mates René Bittinger and Grezet.
Today's 1-2-3 for Jumbo Visma on the stage 4 TT into Montluçon, of some 13.4km, was achieved by Van Aert winning by two seconds from Roglič. Their Australian team mate, and TT specialist, Rohan Dennis in 3rd at six seconds.
While that second clean sweep of the podium today is a repeat of what Kelly and his team mates did 39 years ago, the Jumbo Visma riders still have one clean sweep to notch up if they want to truly equal Kelly and his team from the 1980s. Back in that 1983 edition at Paris-Nice the Sem-Mavic-Reydel riders also finished top three in the final overall; Kelly winning from Grezet and Rooks.
Back to the present day; today's TT stage result means Van Aert has taken the race lead, by 10 seconds from Roglič. Laporte has slipped from the yellow jersey to 3rd overall, at 28 seconds.
After the three Jumbo Visma riders on GC, Simon Yates (BikeExchange-Jayco) is up to 4th overall, at 49 seconds, after a storming ride today. The British rider was 5th on the stage, just 11 seconds down on Van Aert; a performance that suggests he is in great form.
Irish riders Sam Bennett and Ryan Mullen - both of Bora-hansgrohe - had something of a day off today. Mullen, the Irish TT champion, finished in 65th at 1:26 while Bennett was 119th at 2:25.
- Hat tip to Cillian Kelly for spotting the last 1-2-3 in 1983
