Brosnan takes big win in Currow after cliffhanger finish

John Brosnan has claimed victory on the main event at the
John Drumm Cup in Currow, Co Kerry, from a breakaway.

The seven-lap race was over a total distance of 108.5km
and was marked by aggression throughout. However, it wasn’t until the final lap
that that winning scenario was played out.

Bobby Coleman (Greenmount CA), Cathal Moynihan (Tralee BC)
and previous winner Mick Fitzgerald (Strata 3-VeloRevolution) broke clear with
one lap remaining in a move that looked promising.

However, while they pulled out a gap that may have proven
enough on another day, they weren’t let off the leash.

They maintained a gap of just over 30 seconds for a
prolonged period but at Castleisland with just 5km remaining, they had begun to
look vulnerable.

Those chasing them got organised and the gap to the three
leaders began to be pegged back.

And when a chasing trio got clear of the bunch, the gap
came down rapidly.

With 4km remaining there was just 18 seconds between the
leaders and a trio made up for Killarney CC’s Brosnan and Conor Kissane along
with Paul Kennedy (Foran CC).

With about 2.5km to go the two groups of three merged,
paving the way for a tactical run-in, though what remained of the bunch was
just 45 seconds back.

However, when the escapees faced a nervous time as the
bunch got closer, Brosnan lit it up with an attack, which was covered by
Kennedy.

But on the approach to the line Brosnan let rip again
with about 300 metres to go and he proved too strong for the others.

The Killarney man held off Kennedy to win, with Kissane
in 3rd followed by Coleman, Moynihan and Fitzgerald.
