John Aherne wins Charleville Two Day A2-A3
John Aherne (De Ronde van Cork) rode well across all three stages of the A2-A3 Charleville Three Day to take the title for 2017.
He may not have won any of the stages, but he got out of the bunch on the opening and concluding leg. And in the middle TT stage he did enough to keep himself in the fight for the final yellow jersey.
The impressive Aherne went into today's final stage 3rd overall. The only men ahead of him were Cian Smailes (Tralee Manor West iBike) and Bryan Geary of Scott Orwell.
That pair had ridden away from everyone to take 1st and 2nd - Geary winning - that opening stage. But Aherne would get clear in a chasing group and he beat both of them in the Saturday evening TT.
And on today's concluding 92km stage, when the winning breakaway gained just over one minute on the peloton; Aherne was in there and riding into yellow.
Crucially for him, nether Smailes - who went into the race lead after the TT - nor Geary were in that breakaway. And so it was Aherne who ran out the overall winner.
And it was the men he was with in the stage 3 winning breakaway that filled the other places in the top 5 of the general standings.
Mike Brown (Nenagh) would claim the final stage from the breakaway; edging out Sam Gilmore (Arcane) and Senan O'Dwyer (Limerick CC).
Derek Byrne of Newbridge was also in that victorious stage 3 escape, placing 4th.
Scott-Orwell's Geary beats Smailes for stage 1. But Aherne and Walsh are just behind; and crucially just ahead of the bunch gaining time that would prove the winning of the race (Photo: Conor Coleman)
In the end Aherne took the title by 14 seconds from Byrne. Stage 3 winner Brown ended the race 3rd overall. And O'Dwyer, who rounded out the podium on the final stage, was 4th overall.
Neil of Scott Orwell would finish 12 seconds down on the breakaway on stage 3 and that was enough to see him finish 5th overall.
And then cane Smailes and Geary; 5th and 6th overall at 40 and 58 seconds respectively.
First two Charleville Two Day stages
The opening stage of the race on Saturday, an 86.2km road race, was won well Geary. The Scott-Orwell man got the better of Cian Smailes (Tralee Manor West iBike).
They finished together and were 27 seconds up on the next man home; eventual race winner John Aherne. He arrived at the line with Padraig Walsh (Comeragh CC) for company.
There was then a further 16 seconds back to another duo; PJ Collins of Raparee and Cian Dolan of Team iTap.
And another two seconds back Keith Colville of Clonmel CC brought the bunch home for 7th place.
That meant a gap of 45 seconds between the leading two - Geary and Smailes - and the main bunch.
The stage 2 TT on Saturday evening was won by William McCormack of St Tiernans CC by 3.8 seconds from PJ Collins. Killian Heary (CKR CC) was 3rd a further two seconds.
And the eventual outright winner John Aherne placed 9th, at 16 seconds; a result that very much kept his hopes alive.
Runner-up on stage 1 Smailes would finish in 13th place at 22 seconds.
Yellow jersey and stage 1 winner Geary would place 34th at 40 seconds. It was a poor result after his fine victory earlier in the day.
That TT outcome meant Smailes went into the yellow jersey for today’s final stage. But the gaps at the top were small.
Geary was 2nd overall at 18 seconds. And Aherne was 3rd, at 21 seconds. Next came TT winner McCormack, at 23 seconds. And PJ Collins was 5th at 25 seconds.
But just as he had done on the opening stage; Aherne got up the road in the concluding stage.
And it was his consistency that won it for him; an excellent end of season ride for the man from De Ronde van Cork.
