Irish ultra cycling legend, and former road race pro, Joe Barr has finished 6th in the 3,600km Race Around Poland to be crowned world champion at the end of his latest epic outing.
Barr, who was too exhausted to stand after climbing off his bike yesterday, is aged 64 years and his performance in the elite category in Poland secured for him the Masters 50 world title. It is the first time the World Ultra Cycling Association has awarded a world title in the Masters 50 category.
He was presented with his world champion's jersey at the prize-giving ceremony in Warsaw yesterday on completing Race Around Poland.
The Northern Irish rider completed the endurance event - after more than nine days of racing - in a time of 213hrs 47 mins. He was 6th in the elite supported male category, for all racers rather than any age-related category.
The race started and finished in Warsaw and involved 30,000m of elevation gaining, skirting close to six countries - Ukraine, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Germany, Russia, Lithuania and Belarus - in the massive loop around Poland.
Barr was crowned 500 mile world champion in 2017 and that Ultra Marathon Cycling Association (UMCA) title was the first world champion title of his career which has now spanned five decades.
Last year he also took victory in Sebring 24 in the US. The 24-hour race, in Florida, saw Barr clock 481.6 miles, or 775km, during the event.
