Jake Gray completes brilliant clean sweep at Newry Three Day

Jake Gray has survived a scare on the final day of the Newry Three when he and his team mates were forced to chase down a 10-man breakaway on the final stage this afternoon, Sunday.

In the end Gray and his team of juniors won out, though not before Nick Clayton of Halesowen Academy went solo to hold off the field in the closing stages and give the leader another scare.

He won the stage by 12 seconds from Stamullen's Craig Sweetman, with Neil Seffen of VC Iveagh on the same time 4th and Gray a further two seconds in arrears leading home the bunch.

Clayton started the day in 16th place, among a group of riders just 27 seconds down on the race leader.

And while he pulled time back and bonuses to jump to 2nd overall in the final general classification, Gray still had 7 seconds in hand to run out the winner.

And stage 1 victor Cathal Smyth of Phoenix CC was 3rd overall, just one further second back.

Gray was very consistent through the weekend, taking 3rd on Friday's opener, winning solo yesterday by 15 seconds and ending the final stage in 4th place.

Those finishing results combined with his prolific scoring in the climbers' classification saw him come away from the weekend not just retaining the general classification crown he had taken 12 months ago and winning a stage but also scoring a clean sweep.

He also won the junior classification, the points classification and the climbers' classification and his NRPT-Magnet.ie squad also won the team prize.

We'll have an interview with the man of the weekend a little later. For full stage 3 and final general classification results please follow the link below.
