Jack Caldwell gains a lap at Mondello Park for impressive victory

Jack Caldwell (Unattached) has done very little cycling since he stopped racing five years ago, but there were no signs of any cobwebs at the Mondello Series last night when he won in impressive fashion.

Having started in the C3 limit group on the night, in the handicapped race, he somehow managed to get onto the back of the C1 scratch group as he was nearing the end of his opening lap and the C1s were just starting.

And though that effort was a lung-burster, Caldwell managed to get right into the group, joined initially by one rider who had set off from the C3 group with him in an attack from the line.

With just Caldwell and Bob Maye (Clonard RC) having gotten out of the C3 group with their early attack and made it onto the back of the C1s, the victory on the night was between them.

As the C1 group managed to close down all of those ahead of them, that group split and some of the riders got away from both Caldwell and Maye - Jack Conroy (Bray Wheelers) pressing clear solo.

However, Caldwell proved stronger than Maye in coping with the C1 group splitting. That meant he took the victory while the C1s, and anyone who could stay with them, raced around the track on the last lap for the minor placings.

Conroy has progressed significantly since taking some trips to Belgium to race and he took 2nd place solo last night. Dowling then came in for 3rd place, at the head of a small group.
