Jack Caldwell digs deep to the line for victory at Beechmount Cup

Jack Caldwell has taken his first victory; winning the
Beechmount Cup in Kilmessan, Co Meath, last evening after a breakaway ride.

In sodden conditions Caldwell (Bioracer-DHL-FRS) got
clear of the winning breakaway in the closing stages.

And while those chasing him caught him just before the
line, he managed to rally in the sprint and take victory.

It was a sweet win for him as he has overcome illness due
to low iron levels to claim his maiden win.

While the Navan Road Club promotion was run off in very
inclement conditions, there was no shortage of aggression during the race.

However, it wasn’t until the final lap that the winning
breakaway went clear, with Caldwell not in the initial move up the road.

Lucan CRC’s Shane Baker and Ronan Killeen pulled clear
with Sean Landers of UCD Cycling Club.

As they pulled out an advantage on the bunch, Caldwell
made a successful move after them.

While he joined the trio up front to make it four, two
more men then got across in the shape of Freddie Stevens (Scott Orwell) and
Cian Keogh (Ciclotel Travel).

With about 2km to
go Caldwell got clear of the breakaway with Landers, though they were caught
about 500 metres from the line.

However, Caldwell
managed to gather himself for the sprint and took the verdict from Stevens,
though the Orwell man pushed him close.

Keogh rounded out
the podium on the night from Landers and the Lucan CRC duo of Killeen and
Baker.
