One of the patrons of the peloton, José Joaquín Rojas, has won many fans for his years of ice cool service to Movistar Team. The recent Netflix series bringing us behind the scenes at Movistar - 'The Least Expected Day' - really captured Rojas's sense of humour. However, the Spanish veteran is also no pushover, as Warren Barguil found out yesterday when both riders crashed in Vuelta Ciclista a la Región de Murcia Costa Cálida (1.1).
Barguil appeared to run into the back wheel of Luis León Sánchez (Astana Qazaqstan) as they rounded a bend in the bunch. The Frenchman, riding for Team Arkéa Samsic, hit the deck and brought Rojas with him. Rojas slid across the road and through the bunch.
After both riders had gotten back to their feet, Rojas let fly at Barguil. "Subnormal, you are a subnormal," he shouted at him, adding "It's always you."
That reference implying Barguil was a repeat offender when it came to crashes may have something to do with the fact he caused the crash that took out Mikel Landa on stage 10 of the 2019 Tour de France. Landa was a Movistar rider at the time and lost over two minutes on the day due to the crash.
In Vuelta Ciclista a la Región de Murcia Costa Cálida on Saturday, Ben Turner (Ineos Grenadiers) took his first pro win, video below. The 23-year-old Brit sprinted in at the head of the reduced peloton, after a very technical finish. He won from Simon Clarke (Israel-Premier Tech) and Jordi Meeus (Bora-hansgrohe).
