iTap's Brody pounces late for career-best win in Dundalk

David Brody was a surprise winner of the feature event in Leinster this afternoon, the 20-year old Castlebar man upstaging a host of more established riders to win the Dundalk Cycle Trader’s Cup.

Riding for Team iTap, Brody started with the A1 group that first had to catch the A2s after they were given a two-minute head-start and the A3 group who were a further two minutes clear.

But with a strong scratch group present – including five ASEA-Wheelworx - it was mostly back together by the midway point of the 75-kilometre out-and-back course.

The A2 group were reeled in by the 10-kilometre mark but a tough group of A3 riders managed to get clear – and stay out front all day.

Chris Reilly (ASEA-Wheelworx) was active throughout and he was one of the first to try and jump across to the break up ahead.

And once he went clear and took Brody with him, the speed of the chase dropped a few knots, giving them a chance at making the junction.

Colm Quinn (Newry Wheelers) also wriggled clear and made it across to form a group of around a dozen.

Reilly jumped again inside 10 kilometres to go and this time, only Quinn and Brody responded.

That trio rode furiously for around six kilometres to establish a gap but the jumping started and the cohesion began to diminish thereafter.

Reilly struck out with two kilometres remaining and looked like he’d take a solo victory but Quinn and Brody had other ideas and they reeled him.

Brody was quickest in the sprint for the line and managed to take the win, with Reilly in his slipstream taking second and Quinn third.

We’ll have reaction from Brody shortly after what was a terrific start to the season for him.
