Graham
Boyd and Rachel Irvine have taken victory in the opening round of the Ulster
Cyclocross Series, promoted by Apollo CT in Lurgan Park yesterday.

Boyd
(McConvey Cycles) ran out a comfortable winner at the end of the elite men’s
race; crossing the line some 29 seconds clear.

Barry
Kellett of Dromara CC was 2nd, with top road rider Darragh McCarter of Donegal
Bay CC in 3rd place, just 10 seconds further back.

Boyd
got a slightly slower start than some of his rivals in the seven lap event but
he went around the second and third laps faster to put some daylight between
himself and the others.

And
though Kellett dug in peg him back a little, the gap grew again to bring Boyd
to victory on the day.

In the
elite women’s race Irvine (The Bike House) hit out hard from the start and
built what proved an unassailable lead on the opening two laps.

By the
end of the second lap, of five, she had built a gap of nearly 40 seconds on eventual
runner-up, Judith Russell (Phoenix CC).

And
while Russell shaved some seconds of Irvine’s advantage during the middle part
of the race, Irvine never really looked troubled.

She ran out a convincing winner, by 40 seconds in the end, from Russell, with Trudy Brown of VC Glendale a further 35 seconds back in 3rd place/
