Irish team pursuiters into next round at World Champs after brilliant ride

The Irish women smashed their national record at the Worlds and are now through to the last eight in the competition; a very solid ride so far

The Irish team pursuiters have smashed their own national record for the event at the World Track Championships in Berlin.

The foursome are also on their way into the next round after they were among the eight fastest in qualifying, with eight teams to qualify for the second stage of the competition.

With a time of 4:21.368, the Irish women - Kelly Murphy, Mia Griffin, Lara Gillespie and Alice Sharpe - shattered their previous best of 4:25.389.

In qualifying earlier today in Berlin the USA were best with a time of 4:11.229, just over ten seconds faster than the Irish.

Great Britain were 2nd in qualifying, just over six tenths of a second slower than the USA with Canada in 3rd, just under 1.5 seconds off the Americans.

It was very tight between Ireland, France and Belgium for the last of the eight places on offering the next stage of the competition, with the Irish women just shading the other nations.
