Having finished 8th in qualifying at the World Track Championships in Berlin yesterday the Irish women met Australia in the first round of the competition today.
Unfortunately they were unable to better their time from 24 hours earlier, which was a new Irish record over the 4km distance by four seconds.
The Irish women went very close to that time today; just under half a second off the 4:21.368 they recorded in qualifying.
That means they smashed what was the Irish record time at the start of these championships both in qualifying and in today's race against Australia.
When they went up against Australia today the Irish women - Mia Griffin, Kelly Murphy, Alice Sharpe and Lara Gillespie - recorded a time of 4:21.844.
The Australians, who are among the best in the world at the discipline, recorded a time of 4:13.454, over eight seconds faster than their Irish rivals.

Germany were fastest today in the first round with a time of 4:11.039. That was marginally faster than the highly fancied USA, who clocked 4:11.634; the two nations riding in different heats and against different opposition in that first round.
The results of the first round saw USA go up against Great Britain in the gold-silver decider.
The USA were crowned champions in a time of 4:11.235, which was almost two seconds faster than silver medal winners Great Britain, who clocked 4:13.129.
In the bronze medal ride-off, Germany overcame Canada; the Germans riding 4:12.964 to Canada's 4:20.404
