Irish Continental team EvoPro Racing has taken its first victory on European soil with Aaron Gate.
The Kiwi yesterday claimed the opening stage of Belgrade Banjaluka (2.1); a four stage race in Bosnia-Herzegovina
Gate came home three seconds ahead of Attila Valter (CCC Development Team) after 193.5km from Beograd to Vlasenica.
A 56-rider group was another three seconds back; the race splitting on what was an undulating course.
The only Irish rider in the race, Daire Feeley of EvoPro Racing, finished in the reduced bunch yesterday in 50th place.
Gate won the New Zealand Cycling Classic 2.2 stage race back in January. On that occasion he also won the opening stage from a breakaway.
Back then he held the yellow jersey all the way and looks like he has a good chance of doing the same over the next three stages.
Yesterday featured 10km of climbing at the very end of the stage, with the three days of racing to come on flatter terrain.
Gate (28) was an Olympic bronze medal winner in the team pursuit in London 2012 and is a former omnium world champion.
Last week he was 2nd on stage 2 of Circuit des Ardennes International (2.2) and went on to take 5th overall.
