Lydia Gurley’s bronze medal in the scratch race was the
highlight for Ireland at the UCI World Cup in Cambridge, New Zealand, though
there were some other solid results.
In the men’s madison earlier today, Sunday, the Irish
pairing of Mark Downey and Felix English finished in 8th place.
Kiwis Aaron Gate and Campbell Stewart took a home win;
Gate coming off a very successful road season with Irish Continental team
EvoPro Racing.
The winners lapped the field four times, with Kelland
O’Brien and Cameron Meyer taking silver for Australia. Michele Scartezzini and
Francesco Lamon (Italy) were third.
Downey and English managed to finish ahead of Hong Kong
and Portugal, both nations Ireland is direct competition with in the fight for
Olympic places.
Also earlier today, Ireland’s Fintan Ryan was 11th in the
scratch race won by Roman Gladysh (Ukraine) from Roy Eefting Netherlands) and
Christos Volikakis (Greece).
In today’s keirin, Robyn Stewart was 3rd in heat 4 of the
opening round and 3rd in the first round repechage.
In the omnium today, the last day of competition, Lydia
Boylan finished 11th overall. The event was won by Yumi Kajihara (Japan) from Jennifer
Valente (USA) and Allison Beveridge (Canada).
On Saturday, Holly Edmondston of New Zealand took the
gold medal in scratch race from Olga Zabelinskaya (Uzbekistan) and then Ireland’s
Gurley.
She adds that bronze to the Europeans silver she claimed
with Lydia Gurley in the Madison two years ago.
In Cambridge on Saturday just before riding the scratch race
Gurley competed in the madison with Emily Kay, the former Great Britain team
rider who has recently declared for Ireland.
That Irish duo finished 7th in a race won by Georgia
Baker and Alexandra Manly of Australia after a very dominant display.
Daria Pikulik and Nikol Plosaj (Poland) won the silver
with Michaela Drummond and Jessie Hodges (New Zealand) rounding out the podium.
In the sprint Ireland’s Robyn Stewart was 17th in the
qualifying round on Saturday and was beaten by Jessica Lee Hoi (Hong Kong) in
the next round.
