After the disappointing, but very understandable, move by Tralee Manor West BC to cancel last weekend's Lacey Cup, the second weekend of the domestic road racing scene has also been hit by some race cancellations. Two promoting clubs have been forced to cancel events in Ulster and Leinster.
Newry Wheelers is going ahead with its John Haldane Memorial in Ulster on Sunday, though it has been forced to scrap its planned women's only race due to lack of entries. Just six women entered for that race and rather than run it with such a small field, female riders can instead enter the other events being held on the day, for A3s or A4s.
Indeed, Newry Wheelers is refunding the women who entered and allowing them - and any other women who want to race this weekend - free entry into the A3 or A4 event. The promoting club is also keeping its entries for all its four remaining races - A1-A2, A3 and A4 - open until tomorrow evening, Saturday. You can enter by following this link.
Also on Sunday, Newbridge Cycling Club is promoting its annual Life Credit Union Newbridge GP. The club is promoting five races on the day; separate races for women and A4s started at 10am followed by three separate races for A1s, A2s and A3s, all starting from 12.25pm. Unfortunately, tomorrow - Saturday, March 11th - there will be no road races in either the Republic or Northern Ireland, with the weather conditions claiming the only event that had been scheduled to take place; Rás Naomh Finian by Clonard Road Club in Moyvalley, Co Kildare.
Colm Maye of Clonard RC said the course was inspected a couple of times and that he and the other volunteers organising the racing held off until as late as possible in deciding to cancel or go ahead as they were hoping the conditions would be right to proceed. Unfortunately, due to the weather forecast, the club this evening took the decision to cancel.
"Our sincere apologies for the delay in making this decision," the club said. "We felt after looking at the roads this evening and a further bad forecast that your safety was not assured. We hope to run this race soon depending on the calendar. All entries will be refunded."
