Irish junior international Ryan Mullen (Planet X) has won the British 25 mile time trial championships today, Saturday, in a record time of 48mins 48secs.
That time would have taken him to fourth in the elite event today and is faster than the 25 mile TT times recorded by Bradley Wiggins or Chris Boardman when they were juniors.
The race today in the North East of England was the national title event for ‘Cycling Time Trials’, the national governing body of time trials in England and Wales.
It was open to riders of all nationalities and riders from any country could be awarded medals if they won. The British Cycling time trial championships are not held until September and while riders of any nationality can also ride that race, medals can only be awarded to British licence holders.
Mullen won both the CTT and British Cycling title races last year, but could not claim the gold medal in the latter because he holds an Irish licence.
He is competing regularly for Irish junior teams and has been a regular on Irish roads this year, where he has taken a number of wins including the Visit Nenagh Classic.
He is the national Irish junior road race and TT champion and will go into July’s Junior Tour as one of the favourites, especially with the first stage being a time trial.
Mullen, who is British-born and lives in Britain but has declared for Ireland, told stickybottle he was delighted with his ride.
“I didn't expect that time today,” he said.
“I expected a decent enough ride and I knew I was an outright favourite for the win. But the wind and rain was torrential during the drive up and I caught up with that weather mid race. About five miles in the rain came down really heavily. I thought about throwing my visor away because it steamed up and with the spray from the road I couldn't see a thing. I was constantly trying to wipe it clean.”
”I wasn't focused on a good time, more about winning the overall championship. I realised I was on for a good time about six or seven miles from the finish. I had it in my head that the previous record was around the 50 minute mark. When it came to three miles to go I completely buried myself and turned in a time of 48:48, taking over a minute off the old record. I’m chuffed to say the least.”
In the elite title event, Michael Hutchinson won in a time of 47:01, by seven seconds from Sky’s Alex Dowsett.
Hutchinson is originally from Northern Ireland and has been one of the best time trial riders in Britain for many years. He had always ridden under a British licence but took out an Irish licence last year. However, he has never represented Ireland in international competition.
