Irish riders’ bad luck continues at ill-fated Astana World Cup meeting

Today’s third day of the World Cup track meeting in Kazakhstan began with confirmation of Martyn Irvine’s exclusion from the omnium and continued with a very rough ride for Caroline Ryan as she tackled the women’s event.

Cycling Ireland had appealed Irvine’s exclusion from the men’s event. However, the Olympic hopeful found out before today’s racing began that the judges were standing over their decision to exclude Irvine (Team Ireland) because he had taken too long to pull out of the elimination race on Friday evening.

If that decision wasn’t bad enough for the Irish, Caroline Ryan (Cunga Bikes) badly misjudged her effort in the qualifying heat of the women’s omnium. She finished 13th of 14 riders, with only 12 to progress to the competition proper in each of the two heats.

The result meant Ryan was out of the omnium before it had even begun.

However, one of the women who qualified fell, breaking her collarbone meaning she could not take her place in the event proper.

This threw a valuable lifeline to Ryan, who progressed into the race proper as a substitute for the faller. But it was far from plain sailing for Ryan from that point.

The first event was the flying lap; her weakest event of the six omnium disciplines. She finished 22nd of the 24 starters, a poor result for the national TT champion and multiple national track champion.

Things didn’t get any better in the points race, where Ryan was 23rd of the 24 starters. In the final event of the day, the elimination race, Ryan was listed as a non starter and she was also not listed in the overall standings at the end of the day’s competition.

She is out of the race, though the reasons for her failure to start the elimination race are unclear. We’ll bring you details of that in a story or on Twitter when we get them.

In other news from Astana today, David O’Loughlin (Cunga Bikes) was 12th in the qualifying of the individual pursuit; with only the first four to progress into the ride-offs for the medals.

The Mayo man got a good start and was seventh of the 22 starters at both the 1km and 2km marks. However, he faded in the third kilometre, slipping five places to finish 12th.

While it was a solid ride for O’Loughlin, who only returned to international track racing in recent weeks after over a year away, the overall trip to Astana for the Irish is one they will want to put behind them.
