Ronan Tuomey has taken a fantastic stage win at the Junior Tour of Ireland on the Wild Atlantic Way.

The Team Munster man was the best of a large breakaway into Ballyvaughan after 97km.

He was too fast for the foreign challengers, with yesterday’s stage winner and points classification leader Jason Oosthuizen (South Africa) in 2nd place.

Rounding out the podium was Lane Maher of the US Hot Tubs team.

And showing he is still as strong as he was when he won stage 1, the yellow jersey of Ben Walsh (Team Ireland) was attentive at the front and took 6th on the stage.

Indeed, it was Walsh whose attack off the front of the peloton began what would prove to be the winning escape.

The riders had four climbs to scale today; peaking at 18.2km, 20.9km, 42.4km and 56.1km.

Not long after the start a very strong five-man escape went clear containing no fewer than three of the Irish team; PJ Doogan, Dillon Corkery and Ethan Downey.

With them were Americans Conor Schunk (Hincapie Development) and Simon Jones (Hot Tubes).

They settled into a strong pace and had a gap of one minute even before the first climb started.

Doogan took the KOH from Corkery and Jones. And at the second KOH less than 3km up the road Doogan again claimed maximum points, this time from Schunk and Downey.

When the time checks came through at the 25km mark the breakaway’s lead had gone to 1:20.

However, soon the Hot Tubes team began chasing at the front of the bunch. And 2nd placed overall Gaelen Kilburn (Hot Tubes) would attack.

And while he would be caught, the breakaway’s effort began to fall apart on the third KOH of the day, Corkscrew Hill.

When the gap came right down, Cameron Orr of Lucan CRC jumped across to the breakaway on his own.

Over the top of the climb Doogan would again lead the way; from Schunk and Jones.

And while the breakaway would be caught, it was Orr who would take the cat 3 KOH at 56km from Eoghan McLaughlin (Team Connacht) and Doogan.

And just as it looked like the bunch was headed for a mass sprint finish, yellow jersey Walsh would launch an attack with about 15km remaining.

He was followed by Oosthuizen and then Aaron Doherty (Team Ireland), Ricardo Broxham (South Africa) and eventual stage winner Tuomey.

They managed to pull out a small gap and in the attacks off the front of the peloton behind, a group of 12 riders would pull clear.

They would catch the escape, forming a group of 17 up front. And as the kilometres ticked down five other riders would get across.

By the finish that front group numbered 22, of which Tuomey simply had too much in the tank.

Walsh kept his yellow, and in some style it must be said. South African Oosthuizen retains the points jersey and Doogan leads the climbers classification.

The first year junior competition is lead by American Kilburn and Team Ireland leads the team classification as the end nears.
