Irish juniors come through baptism of fire at European Champs

Four Irish juniors came through an international baptism of fire at the European Cyclocross Championships in Silvelle, Italy, yesterday.

Against the best junior competition from around the world, with all the top cyclocross nations present; Darcey Harkness, Roisin Lally, Ciaran Dixon and Darren Rafferty stayed the course.

Island Wheelers man Rafferty was best of the Irish as he finished in 38th place in the men's race, with his compatriot Ciaran Dixon in 59th.

The race was won by Thibau Nys (Belgium), the son of
legend Sven Nys, twice the elite world champion.

Another of the Belgians, Jente Michels, was 2nd at nine
seconds. Swiss rider Dario Lillo took bronze, 01:10 down on the winner.

In the women's race Roisin Lally was 26th in the green of Ireland while her team mate Darcey Harkness in 33rd.

Puck Pieterse claimed the title for the Netherlands, some 28 seconds clear of French rider Olivia Onesti.

Another one of the Dutch cyclists, Shirin Van Anrooij, rounded out the podium finishing 44 seconds down on Pieterse.
