Oisin Ferrity's decision to forgo stage racing at home over Easter in favour of a longer stint competing in Belgium has paid dividends with the Irish junior champion winning his first race in Europe today.

Ferrity, a second-year junior with Caldwell Cycles, has already won several races at home since the start of the season, including the A2 event at the Life Credit Union Newbridge GP, Co Kildare, last month and the A2 race at the Seamus Kennedy Memorial in Co Meath on the opening weekend of the season.

Today in Belgium he was best in the 88km Westkerke Oudenburg junior race, which was promoted in Flanders. In wet conditions the 17-year-old from Coalisland, Co Tyrone, came to the line in a four-man breakaway that was 20 seconds clear of three chasers and almost one minute up on the next group on the road.

Ferrity comfortably won the sprint for victory, taking the verdict from Belgians Luca Boonen (Isorex Cycling Team) and Baptiste Swertvaegher (Canguru Latexco), who were 2nd and 3rd. Lithuanian rider Kristupas Mikutis (Cannibal B Victorious) was 4th, while Saar Shilo (Cycling Israel) won the sprint from the chasing group to take 5th place.

More to come.
