The growing popularity of gravel racing shows no signs of abating, with what began in the US now having very much caught fire in Europe. And not to be left behind, Galway Bay Cycling Club has confirmed details of an open gravel racing series for this year.
The series will feature separate races for a variety of categories, with racing taking place on four consecutive Saturdays on the bogs and unpaved roads of Co Galway. The host club has already added the Galway Classic to the Irish calendar, enabling riders sample gravel sectors during a long hard race, which has already become a very coveted victory to take on the domestic scene.
And now Galway Bay CC's 'Bog Trials' gravel series will be run next month, after a successful inaugural edition last year. Places in each race are limited to 30 riders so it would be advisable to get in quick.
"The races take place entirely on gravel and unpaved roads in the bogs of east Galway," Galway Bay CC said of its planned racing series next month. "The races will be like a mixture of cross, mountain biking and road racing and will favour those with strength and good bike handling skills."
The four rounds will take place at Abbeyknockmoy on the four Saturdays of February, the 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th. The series will include the following races:
- Men's A Race (experienced road, 'cross. mountain bikers and open to gravel, 'cross bikes and mountain bikes)
- Women’s Race (open to 'cross, gravel and mountain bikes)
- Men's B Race (open to 'cross, gravel and mountain bikes)
- Youth races for U12, U14 and U16 riders (open to 'cross, gravel and mountain bikes)
Sign on and parking will at Abbeyknockmoy Community Centre (C7QC+W7 Abbeyknockmoy, County Galway) with races starting at 11am each Saturday. For more information contact Mick Ruane at [email protected]
