Irish fight for survival against biggest guns at World Cup, Koksijde

Ireland had riders in three events at the UCI Cyclocross World Cup in Koksijde, Belgium, on Sunday; a day when the notorious sand on the course caused havoc.

Junior rider David Conroy, U23 man David Montgomery and elite competitor Glenn Kinning were all credited with finishing positions at the end of their races, no small accomplishment at this level.

In the main event, Sven Nys from Belgium took victory after getting the upper hand in a two-way battle with compatriot Wout Van Aert.

And while the sand sections on the circuit were unlike anything Glenn Kinning (Kinning Cycles) was used to, he battled all the way and came home in 51st place.

In the U23 race, national U23 and elite champion David Montgomery came home in 34th place.

Like the elite event, the Belgians took victory; this time taking a clean sweep of the podium.

Eli Iserbyt just edged out team mate Daan Hoeyberghs, with Daan Soete in 3rd place 20 seconds behind the winner and runner-up.

And in the junior race, David Conroy was 45th at the end of the contest won by Jens Dekker (Netherlands).

Jappe Jaspers (Belgium) was 2nd, some 24 seconds back, with another Dutchman Mitch Groot just two seconds further back rounding out the podium.

Conroy was riding in the colours of his Scott-Donnybrook Landscaping team against a field filled with national squads and in such circumstances his finishing was a good result at this level.

More to come.
