One of the top Masters riders in Ireland in the peloton and off-road, Des Woods has just missed out on a medal at the Masters Cyclocross World Championships in the UK.
The Newry Wheelers rider had to come from the back of the pack after being gridded at the back of the 70-rider field in Trinity Park, Ipswich, Suffolk.
However, by the end of just over 40 minutes of racing he finished 4th in the 55-59 years race and was very close to taking that final step on the podium
Woods was just two seconds behind bronze medal winner, Simon Hale of Army Cycling Union, on the finish line.
He told stickybottle while he took a while to get into his stride, as he had to pick his way through so many riders, he was happy with his performance, though he very nearly caught Hale to take the bronze from him.
The handicap the poor gridding position imposed on Northern Irishman Woods was clear to see early in the contest as eventual bronze winner, Hale, rode the first lap of six some 22 seconds faster than Woods, who had a mountain to climb after that.
More to come.
