Irish cyclists Marcus Christie and Aaron Wade are enjoying a very strong campaign at the four-day Trofeu ciclista Pla de Mallorca; winning two stages and taking the overall lead between them.
Wade, riding for Powerhouse Sport this year, had already claimed two victories in recent weeks in Mallorca, where he has been based for training, and he won stage 2 of the four-day race yesterday.
Christie, a former An Post-Chainreaction team member and one of the best TT riders in Ireland, won the stage 3 TT today and he goes into the final stage tomorrow with the yellow jersey on his shoulders.
The opening stage of the race on Thursday was 102km from Ariany to Maria de la Salut, which was won by Sascha Weber (Trek Vaude). The 33-year-old former German national cyclocross champion and former cyclocross international won by one second from American Cory Greenberg (33) of Continental team Dauner D&DQ-Akkon.
Christie (Unattached) finished 8th on Thursday's opening stage, just three seconds behind the winner. Wade finished in 25th place another 15 seconds back.
Yesterday’s stage 2 was 110km starting and finishing in Sant Joan, in the centre of the island, and featured an uphill finish for the last 1km, where the front group split.
In the sprint to the line from the large group, Wade proved strongest and took the win from 23-year-old German Dominik Bauer of the Dauner D&DQ-Akkon Continental team, with stage 1 winner Weber in 3rd place.
In today’s stage 3 - a 12.4km TT – Christie clocked 15:35 to win by 10 seconds from Swiss rider Roman Locher (CC SA Pobla), with Wade 3rd at 29 seconds.
Christie now leads overall, by 35 seconds, from Weber with one stage remaining. Wade is 3rd overall, 37 seconds down, and he also leads the climbers' classification.
