Seth Dunwoody (Bahrain Victorious Devo) has taken a fantastic 2nd place at U23 Paris-Roubaix and was denied victory by a tiny margin on the velodrome in Roubaix.
The Irish rider, who spoke to stickybottle on the eve of the race, which was one of the big goals of his season, has really proven his credentials over the pavé today.
He was among 11 riders who rose to the top over 159km of racing, which included 23 sectors of pavé in northern France.
However, though Dunwoody was perhaps the favourite to win in a sprint on the velodrome, the final was complicated by a late attack by three riders.
And when the big finish came, Dunwoody was just beaten by Davide Donati (Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe Rookies) in a finish that was so close it went to a photo decision.
Dunwoody's 2nd place today is the best Irish result since Aidan Duff took 8th back in 1998, with Stephen Roche the only Irish winner of the U23 Roubaix, way back in 1980 just before he turned pro.
More to come.
