Sam Bennett has continued what is fast becoming another dream season for him by taking victory on stage 3 at Volta ao Algarve today.
His latest win, which is his seventh victory of the 2021 season to date, comes just two days after he won the opening stage of the race to claim the yellow jersey for a day.
With the green jersey of points classification leader on his shoulders today, Bennett was the fastest in the bunch sprint that settled the 203km stage from Faro to Tavira.
Bennett prevailed again today despite his Deceuninck-QuickStep team being put under pressure on the front of the peloton in the final 2km. Bora-hangrohe swarmed at the head of the bunch in a bid to set up Pascal Ackermann for the victory.
However, Bennett and his final lead out man, Michael Mørkøv, simply waited behind the Bora-hansgrohe riders until they were ready to hit the afterburners hard.
Mørkøv surged forward, with Bennett in his wheel, and overtook all of the Bora-hansgrohe men with apparent ease. And as the finish line approached Bennett kicked hard to take the win from Danny van Poppel (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux), with Mørkøv in 3rd place.
As the stage ended in a sprint finish there was no change in the overall, with yesterday's summit finish winner Ethan Hayter (Ineos Grenadiers) holding onto the yellow jersey with two stages remaining.
More to come.
