Ireland’s Ryan underlines her class in high-octane London Velodrome

Caroline Ryan has finished tenth in the individual pursuit at the World Cup in London, underlining the promise she showed at this level in the Cali World Cup in December when she finished 7th.

Since then, Ryan has had the benefit of a high altitude training camp in Spain, where she trained with the Irish triathlon squad under the watchful eye of their cycling coach Tommy Evans.

However, she also had the misfortune of breaking her toe, when she stubbed it in her hotel room. The injury did not prevent her continuing the training camp but won’t have helped her preparation for London.

She was also competing today in what was very much a high pressure pre-Olympic environment; with the London velodrome being tested competitively for the first time ahead of the Games in the summer.

The GB team and other countries hoping to do well in the Olympics are also all ramping up their effort, meaning this weekend’s meeting has been run off in a high octane atmosphere.

Ryan said afterwards that while she was “not delighted” with her ride, she had to be pleased with a top ten in a World Cup despite her injury.

Her time of 3:42.106 put her in tenth position, of 22 starters, in the qualifiers; with only the four fastest going forward for the ride-offs that decide the medals.

It’s been a good week for the Irish women, who has now definitely emerged as a rider who can compete very well on the international stage.

As well as today bagging another top ten in a World Cup, she was also awarded €20,000 in funding by the Irish Sports Council during the week. Her next major target will be the UCI World Track Championships in Melbourne.
