Ryan Mullen is having a very good ZLM Toer so far and though there are still three stages to go, 12th overall after two stages is a very impressive showing by him.

Ireland’s Ryan Mullen has jumped up two places to 12th overall after stage two of the ZLM Toer in the Netherlands.

The Cannondale man crossed the line on today’s second stage in a large group just 10 seconds behind stage winner Wesley Kreder of Roompot-Oranje Peloton.

It was a Dutch 1-2-3 this afternoon with Twan Van den Brand (Cyclingteam Jo Piels) nicking second from Rabobank development team rider Marijn Korevaar.

Mullen was 67th on the stage today, with Marcel Kittel of Etixx-QuickStep leading in the main group in fourth.

Today had very little in the way of climbing but that didn’t stop over half the peloton losing time.

Having been 14th on the opening prologue yesterday, Mullen’s performance today saw him climb two places.

And he’s just 12 seconds down on race leader Jos Van Emden of LottoNL-Jumbo who blitzed the race against the clock on Wednesday night.

With the general classification so tightly packed it’s still anyone’s race but tomorrow’s third stage should see a significant shake-up in the overall standings.

The 210-kilometre stage which starts and finishes in Buchten features some real pinch points, and save for the final quarter of the race it’s up and down all day.

However, in recent years the stage has come down to a bunch sprint so Mullen will be hoping to at least preserve his position.

Stage four is more of the same lumpy terrain while Sunday’s concluding leg is a pan-plat day.
