Ireland’s Mullen meets Chris Hoy in baptism of fire at London World Cup

Eoin Mullen - London 2012

Teenage sprinter Eoin Mullen has had an eventful weekend at his World Cup debut in London, hitting the deck in the keirin but gaining some invaluable experience racing against the best in the world over three sprint events.

The 18-year-old from the Aran Islands was today in action in the sprint 200m TT; won by Great Britain’s Chris Hoy in a time of 9.932 seconds and an average speed of 72.492kmph.

Mullen was 44th of the 56-man field. He posted a time of 10.736 seconds for an average speed of 67.064kmph.

That performance rounded off a busy weekend for the youngster who was also in action on Friday and Saturday in the kilo and keirin.

He kicked off his campaign on Friday in the 1km TT. He posted a time of 1:05.281 to claim a very credible 15th of the 24 starters in what was a top international field (see results below).

However, after that smooth and promising start, Saturday was to prove a bit more adventurous and not all for the right reasons.

In the keirin – a mass started sprint which is motor paced to a speed of around 50kmph until the final 700 metres – Mullen was drawn in his heat with Chris Hoy. The GB star sprinter duly won the eight-lap event with Mullen coming home fifth of the six riders.

The Irishman was then entitled to go forward to the keirin first round repechage event later on Saturday. However, it was in that race that disaster struck with a Malaysian rider falling right in front of Mullen taking him down and out of the race.

Against that background, it was to his great credit that he got himself right again to line up in the sprint event today.

Based at the UCI’s World Cycling Centre in Switzerland, Mullen’s big target for the coming year is the U23 European Championships.

Find below more photos of Mullen in action over the weekend and the full results for all of his three sprint events.
