Mia Griffin (IBCT) has taken one of the best results of her career on the road with 10th on the final stage of Baloise Ladies Tour (2.1). That's the Kilkenny woman's second top 10 result against top tier opposition after 9th on a stage of Kreiz Breizh Elites Dames (2.2) last year.
Griffin combined well with her team mate, and Irish national champion, Alice Sharpe during the four road stages in Belgium. Griffin led out her team mate on Saturday, with Sharpe taking a fine 6th place and Griffin holding on for 11th.
Yesterday on the 119.7km stage into Deinze the tables were turned, with Griffin 10th and Sharpe 20th in the bunch sprint that settled the stage, which was won by Lorena Wiebes (Team DSM). Daria Pikulik (ATOM Deweloper) was 2nd and Mylène de Zoete (AG Insurance-NXTG Team) 3rd.
Incredibly, Wiebes won all four of the road race stages on the six-stage race but she did not take the general classification. That went to Ellen van Dijk (Trek-Segafredo), the world TT champion, who won the prologue TT and also the stage 3(b) TT.
Van Dijk, who is also the reigning European road race champion, took the overall victory by 21 seconds from Wiebes, with Audrey Cordon-Ragot (Trek-Segafredo) was 3rd at 1:02.
