Ireland's Dillon Corkery pleased with Worlds debut despite late mishap

Ireland's Dillon Corkey rode the mixed relay TTT event at the World Championships in Yorkshire as part of the UCI's centre of excellence team

Dillon Corkery has said he was pleased with his elite World Road Championships debut after riding the mixed relay TTT in Yorkshire today.

The 20-year-old Irish cyclist got a call up to ride for the UCI World Cycling Centre composite team in what was the first running of the new mixed relay at a World Championships.

The UCI's line-up was a young one and finished 11th of the eleven teams entered, as was perhaps expected.

Comprising three men and three women, each team'smale trio did a 14km lap of the circuit before being relayed by their women's line-up; for a total race distance of 28km.

The wet conditions on a technical course made for some dicey racing, with the Netherlands winning from Germany and Great Britain.

The winning formation was made up of Bauke Mollema, Jos van Emden, Koen Bouwman, Lucinda Brand, Amy Pieters and Riejanne Markus.

They clocked a time of 38:28, some 23 seconds up on the Germans and 58 seconds better than Great Britain. The UCI team Corkery was part of was 3:28 down.

“Today was class, it was some experience and atmosphere even in the bad weather,” Corkery told stickybottle.

“The start was great and we settled into
a nice pace, I struggled a little on the climb; the two guys I was with were
super strong.

“But I held on and we came over a
few speed bumps and my chain popped off. But I could get it back on without
getting off the bike.

“The guys had already put a few
bikes lengths into me at that stage so my plan to give them a big effort with
2-3km to go and then pull off was gone. But they were strong enough to finish
out by themselves.”

He added it was great to be part of
the Worlds set-up on the day.

"To be on the ramp with the world champs strips at my wheels was one of the coolest things ever," he said.
