Derry’s Clare Dallat has made worthwhile the trip to Ireland from Australia, where she is based, by winning the afternoon time trial stage of the An Post Rás na mBan in Sneem, Co Kerry, today.
That stage victory combined with her bunch finish in today’s opening morning stage was enough to put her into the pink jersey heading into tomorrow’s 80km stage 3.
Riding for Galway-based Black Rose Racing, Dallat won today’s climbing 3.4km TT by 9.68 seconds from Denmark’s Sofie Kamilla Vallin (Reelight/Bike Toyz-Kvickly), with Lydia Boylan of the Irish national team in third at 16.17 seconds.
This morning’s road stage winner, Femke Van Kessel of the Dutch ‘NWVG Bike 4 Air Dames’ squad was fourth, 21.49 seconds back. She looks like she will be a force to be reckoned with over coming days.

Van Kessel looked very strong on her way to winning the bunch sprint for this morning’s stage. She crashed on the first of four 16.5km laps but fought her way back on. Soon after regaining contact with the main bunch she took the second lap intermediate sprint, laying down a marker that she has come here to race.
The Irish team controlled the front of the race with the Reelight-Bike Toyz-Kvickly team from Denmark, with the NWVG Bike 4 Air-Dames riders also prominent on the climb of Letterfinish.
Danish junior Amelie Diderickson (Reelight-Bike Toyz-Kvickly) took maximum points on the two categorised climbs of the day and with them the early lead in the IVCA Queen of the Mountains classification.
The stage was then settled in a bunch sprint, with Van Kessel quickest in the charge to the line.
However, Dallat’s convincing win in this afternoon’s TT not only brought her the pink jersey but also the lead in the Sneem Hotel County Rider classification.
A former winner of this race overall, it is Louise Moriarty of the Look Mum No Hands UK team who will wear that country jersey tomorrow over the climbs of Knockanoughanish, Healy Pass, and Caha Pass.
Moriarty was 6th in today’s TT, with Lauren Creamer of the Irish national team in 7th and Ann Ewing of Black Rose Racing in 9th.
While the time gaps are modest after the first two stages – one minute covers the first 35 riders on GC of the 65-rider field – those with ambitions of winning this race and who now find themselves down the standings will need to go on the attack.
