Ben Healy powers to great result at Innsbruck Worlds

Irish champion Ben Healy has put in a great ride in the TT at the World Championships to take 14th place.

Healy, who is based in Britain with Zappi Racing, declared for Ireland this year.

He won the Irish junior time trial title in June in Sligo. And two days later he was 2nd to Adam Ward in the junior road race.

Today in Innsbruck Healy rode the junior test for Ireland with Aaron Doherty. And both riders can be pleased with their performance.

They left it all out on the road and took away results that showed they more than held their own.

The 27.8km test was won by Belgian Remco Evenepoel; the 18-year-old who has already signed a two-year deal with QuickStep for the next two years.

Ireland's Aaron Doherty and Ben Healy drive on at the World Championships in Innsbruck.

Today Evenepoel, who is already a star in Belgium, was simply in a class of his own, clocking a time of 33:15.

His average speed – at 50.165km per hour – was more than 2km per hour faster than even the silver medal winner.

The man who finished runner-up was Luke Papp from Australia; the Oceania road race and TT champion.

Papp trailed Evenepoel by 1:24, with Italy’s Andrea Piccolo taking bronze a further 14 seconds back.

Ben Healy’s 14th place came in a field of 71 riders. And he was 2:49 down on the winner.

Aaron Doherty can be happy with a solid ride; finishing 46th at 4:39. And both will now turn their attentions to the junior road race.

They ride the road race as part of a four-man selection that also includes Breandán Flannagan and Archie Ryan.
