Oisin O’Callaghan and Ronan Dunne had made history in the United States today where the two Irish riders finished 1st and 2nd in the seventh round of the UCI Downhill World Cup in Snowshoe.
Dunne (Continenteal Nukeproof Factory) was in the hotseat in today's final when O'Callaghan (The YT Mob), the former junior world champion, ripped down the course to beat his team and seal a famous Irish 1-2.
O'Callaghan took off with real intent on the top of the course, almost clipping some of the barriers and covering the first stretch, to the first intermediate timing point, some nine tenths of a second faster than leader Dunne.
The young Limerick rider - who along with Dunne is one of the most exciting young riders Ireland has in any discipline - managed to shave another fraction of a second off Dunne's time by the second intermediate point, leading Dunne by 1.05 seconds there.
However, sooner after the second split, O'Callaghan almost came a cropper when the bike nearly went from under him during his frantic run, as an anxious but excited Dunne looked on. But that mishap didn't seem to slow O'Callaghan, as he extended his leader further, to 1.23 seconds at the third time split.
O'Callaghan got on the gas on the bottom section of the course, putting the work in and pulling out his advantage over Dunne to a whopping 1.672 by the fourth split, with victory looking assured. And while Dunne - who applauded O'Callaghan to the line - covered the last section much faster than his compatriot, O'Callaghan still took victory by 0.496 seconds.
More to come.
