Having won Friday evening’s short opening road race stage at Rás Dhun na nGall, Adam Stenson has shown his versatility and current good form with another victory in the race.
The NRPT-Magnet.ie, riding for Bikeworx this weekend, took the shortened Saturday morning time trial (TT) stage to double his stage win tally for the weekend.
In previous years the hilly stage 2 TT has resulted in larger time gaps but the usual course starting from Mahera Sands had to be abandoned due to road works.
This time around the stage was help on the main Killybegs Road, though the Nick climb the stage was due to conclude on on the alternate route also had to be cut due to road works.
It meant the stage was shortened by about 1km and the shorter stage and absence of a climb meant a faster test with smaller than usual time gaps.
Stenson, who had taken the opening stage in a bunch sprint, took victory from James Curry of Cycle Sierra Nevada by just over nine tenths of a second.
Marc Heaney of Cycling Ulster, who was 3rd in the opening stage was 3rd again this morning with Ben Walsh of NRPT-Magnet.it putting in a really good rider for 4th.
This afternoon’s stage 3 takes the riders on three laps of the loop from Ardara to Glenties and Narin.
And with the TT gaps the only thing separating the riders at the top of the general standings, it’s still a wide open contest.
