Archie Ryan may have been working for his EF Education-EasyPost team mate on the opening stage of Tour de Pologne but today the Irish rider got his own chance and made a very good fist of it to take a result of his own.

Ryan was a little bit squeezed on what was a technical finish, with a tight left-hander just before the finish line, but got up for 4th place on a stage won by Thibau Nys, the Lidl Trek rider who had also won the opening stage of the race on a similar finish.

The Irish rider went shoulder to shoulder at the front of the group with the leading riders, including yellow jersey Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) in the jockeying for position as the sting of the uphill finish began to kick in with about 500m to go.

Ryan entered the final corner, in the last few hundred metres of the 900m incline to the finish line, around 4th place. And when the leaders exited that bend, he had lost a little ground to those just ahead of him.

However, he dug in all the way to the finish line to hold his place, finishing 4th behind winner Nys, runner-up Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates) and 3rd place finisher Wilco Kelderman (Visma-Lease a Bike)
