A huge crash in the main field on today's stage 5 of La Vuelta saw a large number of riders losing time, including race leader Rein Taaramäe (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux).

The time loss incurred by the Estonian reached 2:21 by the time he limped to the finish, which saw him slip from the top of the general classification to 27th place.

Others to lose time after the crash included: 25 seconds for Pavel Sivakov (Ineos Grenadiers); 1:30 for Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers); 1:40 for Jesús Herrada (Cofidis); 2:08 for Guillaume Martin (Cofidis); 12:32 for Romain Bardet (Team DSM).

Kenny Elissonde (Trek-Segafredo), who started the stage 2nd overall at 25 seconds, has now taken over the race lead. He enjoys an advantage of just five seconds on Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma).

Today's stage - some 184.4km from Tarancón to Albacete - came down to a bunch sprint, which was won by Jasper Philipsen, who was taking his second victory of the race for Alpecin-Fenix.

Yesterday's stage winner Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck-QuickStep) was 2nd and Alberto Dainese (Team DSM) placed 3rd.
