Big crash mars start of Azencross men's race | Video

A major crash on the start line today at Azencross in Loenhout took out some riders and delayed many others

A major crash at the start of Azencross-Loenhout in Belgium today took out a small number of riders and delayed over half the field, right on the line, with Florian Vermeersch (Lotto Dstny) left in pain after taking the brunt of it.

World champion Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) got a clean start to avoid the chaos on the line and went to win the race.

He claimed the victory for team mate Gianni Vermeersch and Felipe Orts (Burgos-BH). Van der Poel made his move off the front on the third lap, reaching for the afterburners and immediately opening a gap.

Just before he want solo he was lucky to avoid another crash - video below - when one of his rivals fell in front of him, forcing the world champion to slow right down in the thick mud.
