Comeback woman Siobhán Horgan has finished 28th in the women’s time-trial at the UCI World Championships in Richmond, Virginia.
The Aquablue woman, making a welcome return to the sport after a couple of years doing duathlon, clocked a time of 43:48 for the 30 kilometre race against the clock.
She was some 3:17 off the pace of gold medal winner Linda Villumsen of New Zealand.
Anna Van der Breggen of Netherlands was three seconds slower than Villumsen with the defending champion Lisa Brennauer of Germany taking the bronze medal another two seconds back.
It was a superb contest from start to finish but much like Tuesday, when the conditions did Ryan Mullen no favours in the men’s U23 event, the weather again played a part in shaping the final results.
Horgan was the 14th rider to roll down the start ramp and despite a sluggish start, she whipped around the latter half of the course, jumping from 13th to seventh fastest by the time she crossed the line.
It was a brave performance from the Irish rider whose season has been far from straight-forward and she was passed out by some of the bigger names as they came in.

Horgan has missed weeks of training at a time this year because of various bouts of illness.
But she got herself into the best possible shape for her debut time-trial at a World Championships, which is a credit to her.
And from a field of 44 riders, 28th is performance she can be very proud of.
Two-time world champion Kristin Armstrong (USA) was in the hot seat for a spell with her time of 40:50 setting the early pace but that time only held until the last wave of riders set off on course.
Villumsen was the ninth-last rider off and she took over in the hot seat as the remaining riders came in.
Katrin Garfoot of Australia looked good for a medal when she stopped the clock at 40:39 – nine seconds behind the eventual winner.
But to her despair, the last two riders off went quicker than her and she ended up fourth.
It’s been an amazing week so far for German riders, with Brennauer’s bronze bringing their medal haul to seven.
She was a part of the German Velocio-SRAM team – featuring three Germans - that took gold in Sunday’s team time-trial.
The Germans followed that up with silver and bronze in the men’s U23 TT with Max Schachmann and Lennard Kamna, respectively.
Yesterday they also took gold in the men’s junior time-trial through Leo Appelt and they’ll have a couple of top medal contenders in Sunday’s elite road race in John Degenkolb and Andre Greipel.
