Heavy crash at Vuelta, Vine out as Rodriguez also badly injured | Video

This was the scene of the bad crash on today's stage 18 at La Vuelta, with king of the mountains leader Jay Vine forced out of the race


King of the mountains at La Vuelta, Jay Vine, was the highest profile casualty of a crash during today's stage 18, though points leader Mads Pedersen and Spanish champion Carlos Rodriguez were also involved.

Vine has been forced out of the race - after winning two stages and while on course to win the climbers classification. Rodriguez (Ineos Grenadiers) continued on but looked very badly injured, with road rash on his legs, arms and upper body and a bloodied face.

Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) was able to remount and rejoin the race after the crash, with occurred early on today's stage to the Alto de Piornal. However, Vine (Alpecin-Deceuninck) could be seen sitting on the road after the crash.

The Australian rider, who was tipped by many to pick up another mountain stage win in the last days of the race, looked like he was in pain as he clutched his arm.

Now that he is out of the race, the climbers jersey will pass to Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers), who has also won two stages so far on the Spanish Grand Tour's 2022 edition.
