Hawkins edges out McCann at ‘P&O Ferries Tour of North’ after day of major splits

Two of Belfast’s favourite cycling sons, Peter Hawkins and David McCann got the better of a NODE4-Giordana trio in the winning breakaway at the ‘P&O Ferries Tour of the North’ today, Saturday, taking first and second on the stage after a lead group of five arrived at the finish together in Rathfriland.

One of the NODE4 Giordana visiting English trio, James Moss has now moved into the yellow jersey.

Yesterday’s Stormont prologue TT winner Frank Niewold of the Dutch SWABO Cycling Team could manage only 20th place today, missing the main escape and losing over six minutes on a day when the strongmen emerged and put their stamp on the general standings.

Today’s winner Hawkins (IG Sigma Sport) is now third overall just one second off the lead while David McCann (RTS Racing) is loitering with intent in fifth on GC, just four seconds off the yellow jersey.

Hawkins told stickybottle he was delighted to win and said he was not disappointed to miss out on going into the yellow jersey. He said with no team mates in the race, being in the lead with two stages remaining would make the race much harder to win overall.

“Tomorrow’s stage is definitely over roads that are easier than today so it will be hard to get away from Moss and his team, but the last stage on Monday is tougher and there is a hard uphill finish so we’ll see how it goes.”

He said when some early moves went today he feared he had missed the boat but was relieved and felt strong from the point he joined the lead group just after the first of two hard climbs at Spelga Dam.

“When we were coming in the road to the finish I was expecting the attacks to come from the others because there was three of them, but that never happened. The finish was actually a bit like yesterday’s stage, it was short uphill but very steep in places so it suited me. I had a tough weekend of racing last weekend and I had trained hard the previous week. But this past week has been proper recovery and I really feel like I’m building all the time for May for some Premier Calendars and the (An Post) Ras.”

There was action from the gun today, with a breakaway of sixteen riders going clear and looking dangerous. It included Irish riders Felix English (Rapha Condor-Sharp), Fraser Duncan (Team Curran Racing) and Conor McAllister (Chain-Reaction Cycles-Vitus).

The team of GC leader Niewold decided to ride after them and while they towed the bunch along for around 25 miles the gap edged out to around two minutes.

The Dutch then decided to stop riding just before Spelga Dam, the first of the day’s two major climbs. When the bunch reached the bottom of that climb the gap to the leaders was around 1:30. Immediately the road went up, McCann saw his chance and blasted out of the bunch. Initially he took a small number of riders with him, but he shelled all of them including Moss as he powered on.

McCann then simply rode across the gap to the breakaway on his own, though the race was far from over behind. Stage winner Hawkins waited until the steeper part of the climb before he had a go and while initially a number of riders went after him, it was only one of the NODE4 riders Matt Higgins that was able to hold him. That duo then caught James Moss, who had been dropped by McCann.

Hawkins worked well with the two NODE4s and blasted across the top of the climb and down the other side, catching the early breakaway and McCann.

There then followed a lull for about ten miles as the break worked together, before they hit the second climb, Santa’s Cottage. Some of the early breakaway men were shattered at that point and got blown out. For those few who were able to hang in, the lumpy roads and attacking on the run in to the finish saw them dropped, until it was just Hawkins and McCann left with the three NODE4s – Moss, Higgins and early breakaway man Kieran Frend.

On the final run in to the finish, the three British team mates were apparently unable to work over McCann and Hawkins. The five arrived into Rathfriland after almost four hours of racing, with McCann leading out the sprint up the short but very steep finishing straight, only for Hawkins to come around him for his fifth win of the season.

Both he and McCann are riding the race with no team mates, so dislodging the NODE4 Giordana boys from the top of the GC won’t be easy. However, Hawkins said he is determined to have a go and McCann looked really strong today.
