Harvey prevails over national champ McGlinchey, Young battles with Doherty

Dean Harvey (Spellman Dublin Port) and Grace Young (All human-VeloRevolution) have won the latest round of the Leinster Cyclocross League; Harvey seeing off national champion Chris McGlinchey (Spectra Wiggle p/b Vitus) and Young prevailing over Aine Doherty (VC Glendale).

In the men's 'A Race' at the McCrystal Park venue in Co Louth, Kevin McCambridge (Trinity Racing) placed 3rd and Leah McCarthy (Team Giant Dublin) rounded out the podium in the women's race.

The men's event saw national champion McGlinchey get a slightly better start than eventual race winner Harvey, though there was nothing to separate them as they started the the first full lap, of seven. McCambridge was just over 10 seconds behind the leading duo and JB Murphy (EvoPro Racing) another 10 seconds back in 4th, just ahead of junior Joseph Mullen (Navan Road Club).

On the the first full lap, Harvey began to open a gap on McGlinchey, as further daylight also opened between the top two and their nearest challengers. Harvey put 28 seconds into McGlinchey on that second lap and added to that on the next three laps.

On the penultimate lap, McGlinchey clawed some time back on leader Harvey; chipping 14 seconds off his advantage. However, Harvey was still over a minute ahead and already had victory in the bag, barring incident. Harvey dug in on that final lap, rounding it 11 seconds faster than McGlinchey to take a convincing win by 1:18.

McCambridge placed 3rd at 2:33 while Murphy, back competing after a bad crash during the summer, was 4th at 3:19. Junior rider Mullen - who has shown great potential already this season - placed 5th at 3:19 with first Masters rider home, Glen Kinning (Kinning Cycles), placing 6th at 4:14.

In the women's race, Young put a couple of seconds into eventual runner-up Doherty on he in-lap. And while she further opened that gap on the first lap proper, of four, her lead was no more than about six seconds. However, that gap doubled on the next passage of the circuit.

And while Doherty, only just into the junior ranks from the U16 category, fought very well in 2nd place, she relinquished 21 seconds to Young on the penultimate lap. In the end, Young ran out the winner by 1:43, with McCarthy in 3rd at 4:21.

Niamh Stephens (Team Giant Dublin) was 4th at 4:53, with Aoife Reilly (Dunboyne CC) in 5th, a further five seconds back. Heather Foley (Yeats Country CC) rounded out the top six at 5:22.

The men's 'B Race' was won by Adrian Carroll (Tullamore CTC). He was just seven seconds up on Sean O'Leary (IMBRC) after four laps of racing, with Bob Hall (Unattached Leinster) 3rd at 26 seconds.
